There may be Polar Vortex temperatures coming down to us this winter, but that won’t stop folks from Duluth from getting out there and enjoying the wilderness and outdoor adventures that our part of Minnesota has to offer. So bundle up (or wait for a pleasant day with a windchill somewhere above 0 degrees) and check out these outdoor winter tourism options in Duluth MN.

Skiing and snowshoeing

Whether you enjoy downhill skiing or cross-country skiing, the Duluth area has options for you. Snowshoe aficionados can enjoy the sections of the Superior Hiking Trail that cross Duluth, or snowshoeing in larger parks like Magney-Snively Park or Hartley Park. A state skiing pass may be required for some of these trails. For downhill skiing and snowboarding, Spirit Mountain is the place to be, with 22 runs. Chester Bowl is another downhill skiing option.

Ice skating and climbing

Duluth is fortunate to offer multiple outdoor ice skating rinks during the winter months that are open to the public. We found an article that lists 13 excellent spots to have some fun on the ice. If you would prefer your ice to be vertical, then you may be interested ice climbing. The Duluth Climbers Coalition offers information about climbing all year round and even has events where people can learn about ice climbing and other winter activities.

After you have spent a day outside in the Duluth area this winter, it’s good to warm up. Fortunately, our city has plenty of great restaurants, theaters, and shows. Exciting possibilities include the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, the Duluth Playhouse, Renegade Theater Company, Teatro Zuccone, and the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.
